Good Friday. An immense congregation at church. No one working any part of the day. Fifty years ago this day was little observed anywhere - hotcross buns for breakfast and salt fish and egg sauce with parsnips for dinner were the occupations of the day, which however was no holiday, for everyone worked. I doubt whether any man in Penkridge parish worked even in his garden [today].
